The previous decade saw a tremendous boost in online streaming platforms. Almost every show are now available on the internet for the viewers. It also allowed the makers to stop fighting for the limited production teams as well as for the prime time slots in various TV networks.

This gave the audience a lot of good shows which have reached almost every part of the world. Most of the shows on this list of the best international shows on Netflix and Amazon Prime require you to put your phone down and read subtitles (avoid choosing the dubbing if you can help it), but not all of them do!

1. Dark.

Dark is a German science fiction thriller web television series co-created by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese. It ran for three seasons from 2017 to 2020. In the aftermath of a child’s disappearance.

 

Dark follows characters from the fictional German town of Winden as they pursue the truth. They follow connections between four estranged families to unravel a sinister time travel conspiracy which spans several generations. The series explores the existential implications of time, and its effect on human nature.

Dark became more popular in 2020 when the pandemic arrived and the world was in lockdown with experts citing that word of mouth made the series more famous.

2. Away

Netflix’s space thriller Away blasted onto the scene late this year and has held viewers’ attention since. The freshman drama only has one season, but Hilary Swank shines as Emma Green, an astronaut who leaves her family behind in pursuit of a daunting space trip to Mars.

For season 1  Rotten Tomatoes reported an approval rating of 60% based on 57 reviews, with an average rating of 6.2/10. Additionally,  Kristen Baldwin of Entertainment Weekly gave the series a C and described the series as “a self-important patchwork of space clichés and boilerplate family conflict that never manages to make it into orbit.”

3. Peaky Blinders

The notorious gangsters of Peaky Blinders make up one of the most powerful gangs of 1919 England. Its leader, Tommy Shelby, returns from war a hero and sets his sights higher than running the streets.  The fictional family is loosely based on a real 19th-century urban youth gang of the same name, who were active in the city from the 1890s to the early twentieth century.
 
Peaky Blinders has had a tremendous cultural impact in the UK. In 2018 the name Arthur surged into the top 10 boys’ names for the first time since the 1920s, and Ada jumped into the girls’ top 100 for the first time in a century too. The show has received praise for its writing, acting, visuals, and stylish cinematography.
 

4. Mind Hunter

Set in  the 1970s, Two FBI agents attempt to understand and catch serial killers by diving in and studying their psychology. Their work even helps to begin the development of modern serial-killer profiling along the way.  Based on the true-crime book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit written by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker the show stars Jonathan Groff  and Holt McCallany  in the lead role.

The series debuted worldwide on Netflix on October 13, 2017. Netflix released the second season on August 16, 2019. In January 2020, Netflix announced that the series was on indefinite hold. The first season of Mindhunter was named among the best TV shows of 2017; it was ranked No. 10 on Meta critic’s year-end list of the best TV shows of 2017 compiled from rankings by various critics and publications.

5. Sacred Games

This International Emmy Award nominee stars  Saif Ali Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Radhika Apte, and Kalki Koechlin starrer Netflix original is probably the best Indian original series to watch. If you haven’t already seen Sacred Games, it’s about time you do.

The storyline of the show revolves around an imminent terror attack in Mumbai, masterminded by gangster Ganesh Gaitonde (Siddiqui). It’s up to police officer Sartaj Singh (Khan) to stop the city from blowing up in 25 days. Only, he doesn’t know where to starts and how deep the conspiracy runs.

The series is  based on a Novel by Vikram Chandra of the same name. The first season of eight episodes released on Netflix on 5 July 2018 across 191 countries. It has subtitles in more than 20 languages. It received mostly positive reviews from critics, with particular praise for the performances and writing. The second season premiered on 15 August 2019.

6. The Family Man

This edgy action web series revolves around a middle-class guy who is actually a world-class spy working for a special cell of the National Investigation Agency. How he juggles between his role as a badass agent and a doting father and husband, while hiding his true identity from his family forms the crux of the story. Manoj Bajpayee who plays the lead role, marked his debut into the world of web series with this ten-episode Amazon Prime Video original series. Written and directed by Indian-American duo Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D.K. The Family Man also features Priyamani, Sharib Hashmi, Vedant Sinha, Mehek Thakur and Sharad Kelkar among others.

7. Made In Heaven

The web series follows Tara and Karan, two Delhi-based wedding planners, who organize big, fat Indian weddings that are a perfect blend of old traditions and modern aspirations. As the story unfolds, they realize not every story is a fairy tale as they uncover the secrets and lies brushed underneath the carpet of Delhi’s social dynamics. Created by Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti, this nine-episode series features Sobhita Dhulipala, Arjun Mathur, Jim Sarbh and Kalki Koechlin among others.

8. Paatal Lok

Starring Jaideep Ahlawat, Neeraj Kabi and Abhishek Banerjee in prominent roles, this crime thriller web series revolves around a class-divided society that is entangled in a monstrous web of crime and violence. At the centre of this society is a cop, who discovers the darker and sinister realms of the netherworld, while investigating a high-profile case. Produced by Anushka Sharma, this web series has not only given the Indian pop culture characters like Hathi Ram Chaudhary and Hathoda Tyagi, but also become a benchmark for all the future series in the crime genre.
